Jelena Gledić Gave a Lecture on the Silk Road as a Place of Contact and Its Cultural Heritage

Lecturer and researcher with many years of experience in the field of Chinese culture, language and literature Jelena Gledić, MA, gave lectures on 16 December 2025 entitled "The Cultural Heritage of the Silk Road" and "The Silk Road as a Place of Contact" to students of Sinology at the Faculty of Philology, University of Banja Luka.
Gledić gave a historical overview of the development of the concept of the Silk Road as well as the network of trade routes that were called by that name, with a special focus on the exchange of ideas and knowledge, as well as on the economic, socio-political and cultural characteristics significant for the contacts of the Chinese empire with other peoples throughout history, especially during the Tang dynasty, when the capital of China was among the world's largest trade centers and a true metropolis. The lectures also addressed the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of the Silk Road, with a special focus on the Silk Road as a space for encounters and intercultural contacts.
Jelena Gledić is a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Philology, University of Belgrade, where she teaches a number of core subjects in the field of Chinese language and culture. She worked at the Graduate School of Language and Culture, Osaka University in Japan, as a specially appointed associate professor, and as a visiting and part-time research project at the University of Virginia and the University of Zurich. She graduated in Sinology, i.e. Chinese language, literature and culture, and received her master's degree in Chinese culture from the University of Belgrade.
